Lookin' for some new software
« on: February 04, 2011, 01:27:02 AM »
Hello!

I'm looking for some good new and simple-to-use software (free if possible, or at least not too expensive).

I need a good clean light program to burn CD-R, DVD-R and DVD+R media. Is there anything good apart from CDBurnerXP?

I also need something in vein of the VirtualDub but much simpler, with less functionality (I just need to copy, cut, paste and shrink the videos from uncompressed to compressed video format). I also need something like Any DVD Converter to convert DVDs to AVI etc. I don't like the Any DVD Converter program, so I'm looking for something else.

Please tell me what do you use for such things or what do you suggest.

Thank you very much! :)
Intel Core i7 Q 740 @ 1.73 GHz, 6 GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1, Avast! Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free version) and Sandboxie (paid version).

To convert DvD to AVI or any other format you wish, I use Format Factory. It's free and amazing. It gives you all the codecs you need to encode in whatever format you prefer and it also enables you to play practically any file in Windows Media Player. It also does audio and video conversions and can do all that you say you want.

For burning CD's and DvD's, I use the free version of Ashampoo Burning Studio. It can burn any kind of disc including Blu-Ray and even has a built in labeler that is capable of burning Lightscribe labels. It can make multi session discs too which most of the other free burning apps can not. It's very user friendly but has enough options to let you do pretty much whatever you want.

Format Factory is easy to find and download but the free version of Ashampoo isn't. Bob3160 posted the latest giveaway of the free version and I just tried it and was able to download the program from http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/lpa/christmasgift?c=XMAS-2010 .

Registering it should be simple from within the app after you install it. Ashampoo sends the license key in an email. From what I understand, everybody gets the same serial number so if you have any problems, message me and I'll give you what they sent me.

You can get a much newer version of Ashampoo's Burning Studio
It was posted here:

Enjoy, it's a great program. You might even be tempted to buy the latest version
even though you really don't need it.  :)

Yes the link Bob gave is a newer version and actually the version I have. I tested it on the other machine here and it downloads, installs and registers perfectly. It does give the same product key to everyone too.

If you look for it on Google it says all the promos are over except for one from a magazine in Germany that makes you go through a convoluted process to get it and register it, all in German too. I tested your link to make sure it still worked and it does.  I just didn't want to recommend something that proved to be unavailable.

I also have ImgBurn but only because it came bundled with DvD Flick. It's a good app but it can't create multi session data discs. It also is not as user friendly as Ashampoo. To me ImgBurn is good at what it's name implies, creating and burning disc images, it's not as full featured in other areas.

DvDFab is not a free program. It's kind of pricey in fact.

There is a free version of dvdfab, you only get the full or main movie decrypt and copy for dvd though and the new decryption code's dont come as often as they would in paid.
The full version is rather pricey but you get what you pay for.

I believe I made the recommendation and wouldn't have made it if it wasn't available.  :)

Wow, what a great response, that's only possible on the Avast forum.  :) What about a program to edit video (cut, copy, paste and compress), VirutalDub is too much for me. And thank you all very much!
