Outlook Express6 Can't Connect to Pop or SMTP servers!
« on: February 04, 2011, 03:30:27 AM »
I am trying to find the fix for this issue.
If I turn off Avast 5 mail shield then outlook can send and receive just fine!
If I turn the Mail Shield ON then Unable to connect to Server!
SSL is disabled.
No firewall.
No other AV.
Win XP home.

I have un-installed and re-downloaded Avast and re installed. No change!

Look forward to any suggestions please...

What is your firewall ?
At the very least you should have the windows firewall, but that in XP has zero outbound protection, so shouldn't be getting in the way.

When did this start to happen and have these accounts worked before ?
Is this for both POP3 and SMTP (receive and send) ?
Is this for all accounts or for specific ones ?

What errors are you getting, please post the full text or an image of the error text ?

What version of Avast! are you using? The free, Pro, or full suite? I have 5.1.889 Free and I have no problems with Outlook Express. What pop servers are you trying to connect to? The only email provider I've had a problem with is Yahoo but I have even found a way to make that work in OE.

Using Windows Firewall, (turned off to try to determine the cause), Avast Free.
Have just removed Norton Security and wonder if it is in  any way related to this?

Yes these accounts work fine if the Mail shield is turned off.
When Mail shield is on, message says unable to connect to server for both the POP and SMTP servers?

Make sure that the accounts in OE are not set to use SSL. If they are, they won't play nice with the mail shield. Avast! has it's own built in form of SSL that it will use on those accounts. I have attached pictures of my settings for a Hotmail account which is one of the more difficult ones to access with POP3. The SSL boxes need to be unchecked on all accounts.

Hi DCH,
Thanks for your screen shots but there is no SSL and all references to this are unchecked.

Could there be some remains of norton hooked into outlook express?
Mails send and receive fine if mail shield is off.

Have you used the Norton removal tool? You should try that even if you have uninstalled Norton in the normal way. Norton does a much better job of removing itself now than it used to. I personally used Norton for 11 years and never had any problems with uninstalling any of their products even without using the tool, but some apparently have.
