SF.bin files
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:35:32 PM »
I use Avast Free and Comodo firewall.Lately everytime avast has an update and I try to run a full scan my firewall ask's me if I want to allow SF.bin.
I have tried everything short of getting a new firewall how do i stop this. Its annoying having to stand there watching a full scan run.

It's not the firewall, it's D+ (HIPS part) that asks you. ;)

- The SF.bin file is the code emulation part of avast and is downloaded or updated on virus definitions updates.

So, how do we make that warning stop?  It's pretty annoying.  I've already made AvastSvc.exe a trusted file in Defense+, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

I don't use comodo, so I don't know; since the warning is coming from that you have to be able to tell it it is OK and to remember your answer, etc.

Making avastSvc.exe trusted won't make a blind bit of difference to sf.bin it comodo if having a hissy fit on that as the trust is for avastSvc.exe not everything that might come from its use.

Do I need D+ or is Avast enough protection ? Should I just have the firewall running ?

Well I don;t use comodo so I can't say, laterally not using comodo or D+ hasn't been an issue for me in not having what protection it offers.

Presumably all the other comodo & D+ and avast users must have resolved this or they too would be joining the topic, etc.

When D+ asks you next time, look for an option to let it handle sf.bin as updater or similar and set D+ to remember this answer. As I'm using an older build of Comodo, I can't give you an exact description.

I haven't had the problem at all on my W7 system (avast 5.1.889).

I got this issue a couple of times with my XP system (avast 6 beta). I just ticked allow/remember, and haven't seen it since (though it's early days).

I tried Clicking the allow in both my XP and Vista pc. It only last until the next Avast update, then if you do a full scan pop up blocked again. The only way for me to do a complete scan is to shut off D+ or sit there and wait for the pop up.Very annoying.

I have asked on Comodo forum, they more or less have no idea and so blame it on avast.maybe its time for a new firewall.

I have to say I'm not surprised about the response, as it seems typical when you question something about comodo.

How can it possibly be related to avast, avast isn't popping the comodo c**p and why it either isn't remembering or ignoring your response in the pop-up.

You could be right, time to look for another firewall.

I ditched Avast av v5 as it was conflicting heavily with Comodo's v5 firewall (which I like) although I'm going to try the new Avast 6 av beta and see if the SF.Bin alert still comes up from Comodo (I hope it doesnt)

Also, yes I've seen the Comodo forums where they blame Avast for the issue and doubtless Avast will do the same .. anyway I hope all this is fixed by Avast v6. I have asked this question in the v6 beta forum although no one using Comodo (if there's anyone here) has said whether the SF.Bin alert still comes up with Avast v6

I've just done a def update, a program update, and a full scan with avast 6 and didn't get the SF.bin alert from comodo. (XP)
