avast! updates domains
« on: February 21, 2011, 07:14:34 PM »
I've been trying to find which domains avast connects to in order to update definitions/upgrade, and I've come across some domains like download606.avast.com.

I'me wondering if it goes from download0.avast.com - download980.avast.com? I need to set some exclusions in a system, in order to prevent those domains from being blocked.

Avast has hundreds of update servers (currently 360) so that the load can be balanced across all of them, you need lots of servers with 130 million users.

So unless you intent to create individual rules, just create a rule for avast.setup that is what decides which of the servers to be used based on load, etc. The avast5\setup\servers.def contains a list of servers, but you will find it impossible to create individual rules for these (as they could change and obviously be added to), the same is true to trying to have an IP range as the servers aren't all in the same location.
