   Thank you, Bob.  I know, too, that it is working.  Got a virus update this morning when I turned it on.
    How do I get into that to do the repair?  I checked under add/remove and didn't see an option.  Also can't find anything on the Avast choices.

After you select avast! in the add/remove function, a new window opens up and at that point, choose the repair option.
Don't worry, avast will not uninstall when you first select it in the add/remove function.
