Realtek HD Audio Driver vs Avast 6.0.1000/1044
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:19:38 AM »
Hello everyone.
I'm wondering if any of you encountered problem like me:
I'm running Asus EEE PC 901 and have reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows XP SP3 on it. I've installed Avast 6.0.1000 Free, then all the hotfixes from M$ and Realtek HD audio driver. I was astonished to learn that installing it (ver. 2.57, 2.58 currentlly the one from asus webstite) is cousing websites to stop working.
When I deactivate Web Shieled in avast everything goes back to normal. The same effect I get when disabeling Realtek HD Audio in device manager and then I turn on web shieled. Both them running = no websites for me, altough conection to web itself is present (IM works, pings go both directions). Avast 6.0.1044 beta - same effect.
Has anyone encourted this kind of problem? I must add that I was using this configuration for 2 years and system was out of the box from Asus and this problem didnt occour. What is wrong here?

Is it also a problem with drivers directly from Realtek? Realtek High Definition Audio Codecs.

Yep. Downloaded version 2.57 and 2.58, same problem. So I downloaded Asus version from official EEE 901 page. Problem still exsists :(

Well, unless latest BIOS helps somehow (if you don't have it already) then you need to wait for avast! developers.

Times of decent hardware sound chips are sadly gone. All this SW junk just sucks.  :(

I was running this audio codec with avast from version 4.8, then 5.0, 5.1 and 6.0 on preinstalled Asus Windows XP for 2 years without any problems. Just yesterday I have done a clean installation from pendrive of Windows XP Home and installed same drivers and problem occours. Seriouslly what impact should have audio codec drivers on avast webshield and it's ability to browse pages?? I have no idea ...

Personally, I'd be tempted to say the same about most hardware sound chips as well, especially those associated with Creative Labs  ;D

The connection is not clear to me either - unless the audio codec installation also installs some kind of a firewall simultaneously.

Realtek audio codec and avast!... sounds like quite a common combination. So I would expect that if there was a conflict between those two, we'd hear about it very loudly from many users. Is there any other, probably not so common, tool that you installed on the system when reinstalling Windows? I understand that the problem started to manifest when you installed the codec, but maybe something else is involved?

I just installed the latest version from realtek 2.58 ALC889 6.0.1.6316 and still no problems with avast for me so there is obviously something else involved in your issue.

AvK85 have you tried a custom install of the driver from the link that doktornotor supplied you earlyer ? with a custom install you can choose to fully uninstall everything about the version you have now and any factory installed realtek stuff before installing the new, i originally did this when i wanted all the factory crap off my system and from then on iv only used the express install.

Thanks for the heads up about the Realtek 2.58 HD audio codec update.

I downloaded and installed it firstly on my Net Surfing Dell.  It took a little bit of messing around to get it working but now its working fine including the the HD Audio Manager.

Since I had debugged the install process on the one computer the install went a lot smoother on my my multimedia computer.

This Realtek HD audio codec is a major improvement over the default audio driver.  The sound coming out of the speakers is more than loud enough for the neighbors to call the cops if I turn it up too high. :) :)

Thanks for the heads up on the latest Realtek HD audio codec driver release :) :)
