Can't update
« on: February 18, 2011, 04:57:47 PM »
My computer (or at least the graphics) froze right after login this morning. After rebooting the machine and logging in again - I was informed by avast that the last update failed. Now when I try to update I just receive the 'Last encountered error - The package is broken' error. A quick search looks like everyone's recommendation is to just reinstall avast. Is this the only way to fix this?

Edit: I just saw the recommendation to 'repair'. Trying that says: 'Error processing packages - please use full update'. Trying the 'Update' feature from the same place again gives the error about the packages. Here's the end of the log that is visible trying that way:

18.02.2011 10:00:21 internet: Used server: http://download737.avast.com/iavs5x
18.02.2011 10:00:21 file: GetFileWithRetry: prod-ais.vpx downloaded .

no, you can try repair first

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If you notice the 'edit' I made - you'll see that's what I did and the result. Is there anything else? Having to reinstall the entire program is really not a good solution.

I got exactly the same issue myself

Not sure why everyone thinks re-install is such big issue? Is there something im missing?

For some it is a big issue (especially for those on dial-up, yes some are still stuck on it), it also depends on how much they have customised the avast as you lose all you settings/customizations.

That is why the repair is the lessor of the options and suggested first.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.4.6112 (build 24.4.9067.762) UI 1.0.803/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Alright makes sense. I dont do much with avast so I never thought about it, I just leave it on to protect for viruses and other baddies.

Re-installing works though OP, if you want a last resort thing

I got exactly the same issue you got, even with the same crash at start-up this morning.

The last issue seemed to resolve itself or something because later (possibly after a couple reboots - I don't remember) it said everything was fine and no update was needed.

However...

This happened again this morning (looks like it's the new version release that caused it). I hope that the new version takes care of this problem - except that I can't update to the new version because of the problem....  >:(

I'm just hoping it will randomly fix itself again.

Sometimes it takes a couple of reboots to get everthing straight. :-\
 Don't know why exactly. :)
Also, sometimes there can be file corruption and a Repair or Reinstall often fixes the issue 8)
