geety6,
That kind of attitude doesn't fly on this forum.
If you still haven't remembered the password you originally entered,
Follow mag's advice:
Uninstall- reboot - use the removal tool, reboot again and then reinstall.
After you've finished reinstalling, either use a password you can remember or
even better, don't use that function at all.
Enjoy avast! and have a great day.  :)
Bob don't argue with idiots as that reduces you to their level!  ;)
As they have amnesia they won't remember anyway.  ;)
you two are so smart ;D
don't you think it was the first thing I did when it asked for a password?
Of course I uninstalled/reinstalled it five times, and it asked five times for a pasword I didn't set, so still thinking there isn't a bug in avast!6?? think again if u can please  :)
fyi why the hell would i use that "function"?? it's not like I needed a password or anything and even if I set a password, I always use the same ones over and over and none of them matched, do you know what that means ; it means I didn't set A password!!! u got that?
being falsely accused of people who didn't even have this problem should really don't speak!
Thanks for your understanding  :) (ps. why the hell would I want do disable someones avast? I have A life!)

I've suggested the only thing I could think of. You have probably alienated the more expert help - so I think you may be destined to live that life with a different AV.

I don't know if that comment is supposed to be negative or positive but either way I apologise for my behavior ; I was a little hot-tempered because of the things said about us by people who didn't even have this problem xD
and yeah I'm now using another AV : "AVG Anti-Virus" and seems working fine to me, it's just a shame that I had this problem because I liked avast  ;D
I'll try reinstalling avast about a couple of months, hoping that it won't have the same problem for me by then  :)

geety6,
If there where a problem with avast! itself, this forum should have been flooded with similar post.
If you've been able to totally remove avast!, then you should also have been able to re-install
it without a password unless there is something else going on in your computer that we aren't aware of.
Peace.  :)

It wasn't meant to be either. I just asked myself what I would do if my security software had a password that I didn't know, and I couldn't get at settings.

As bob says, if  you could completely uninstall avast I can't see why some memory that it wants a password would linger.

Hope AVG works out for you.

reinstalling/uninstalling is not the problem, the problem is just that after (re)installing avast, avast asks for a password if you for example go on settings or whatever other function avast! has
maybe there could be a problem with my laptop but why does mg67 also has the same problem as me? and it's just exactly the same problem :S :S :S
maybe we have the same kind of laptop or maybe both of our laptops/computers just really suck xD
I don't think we'll never now the truth, I just hope that we're not the only ones with this problem or else we're like major exceptions ;D
:) good luck with your avast  :)

The password is there even after re-installing? That was always the solution in the case of a forgotten password AFAIK
Did you try with the removal tool?

Well, this can be achieved quite easily. ;) (I don't say, that they did it, though.)
Would he go for it? Would it worth? For what? I don't think they (he) will do it...

I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
The best things in life are free.

Just a little bit of good faith response here:  I've been using Avast for years  now without incident (never needed the forum)and I have been a proud proponent of it. But I am in the same fix Geety is.

Whether someone is a "loser" or suffers "amnesia" the fact is I still have a AV with settings I can't adjust now or in the foreseeable future.  I've followed instructions to the letter T on doing a clean uninstall/reinstall process numerous times, with multiple permutations of instructions similar to Tech's, now with the same (rare) results Geety reported.  It is by no means a short process to repeat time and time again, so it can be REALLY frustrating.

Luckily for now the settings are just the way I like them so it's really not that big a deal, but it would be nice to know if there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Any ideas on what sorts of oversights and/or mistakes I have made? Helpful suggestions?  Anything other than a suggestion to bugger off and use something else happily?

BTW, Tech, you seem very generous and helpful I'm sure that it is appreciated.

Today Since I have the time, I'm having another go at the process.  In addition to uninstalling and running aswclear in safemode, I've dumped my temp files for all users with disk cleanup utility.  However Search of my hard drive still shows 2 avast files in Windows prefetch cache.  Is it possible that these are reponsible for the password ghosting that I am experiencing?

It would be nice if one of the Guys from Avast would stop in here and
take a closer look and maybe answer oberkythin's question about the prefetch cache.

oberkythin,
Can you tell us which 2 files are in the prefetch cache ???
Thanks. :)

(I've requested Mod assistance.)

Bob, thanks for the prompt reply, I was a little worried the thread might have died.

Prefetch seems to have been the problem, I just did a reinstall and can access my settings now.

Once the 2 Prefetch items were the only traces left of Avast on my Drive I defragged hoping that might sort them out.  I had read that prefetch is re-prioritized in the defrag process, and hoped the Avast files might get removed but they were still there on the next reboot.  I couldn't find anyone who said there were dire consequences so I just deleted them.

They were an [Avast.setup-(numbers and letters I can't remember).pf] and [AvastUI.exe-(string of numbers and letters attached).pf]

I know now I should have written them down for posterity, smacked myself pretty hard in the forehead when I read your request.

I can tell you now after a good clean install the password is gone for now and that I have a total of 4 new prefetch files [2 avast.setup-*.pf's , Avastsvc.exe-*.pf , and AvastUI.exe-*.pf

I have no idea how any of this architecture works, but I can tell you the only 2 changes I made from the way I tried a clean install in the past was running windows Disk Cleanup and Deleting the Avast files that were still in my prefetch file.  so this might have been the problem.

Just doing an educated guess, I'm pretty sure that is data within one of the prefetch files that where the culprit.
Until we get a response from Avast, we'll both only be guessing.
