avast! News Service
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:16:12 AM »
Hello

Is there any way to switch this off so it no longer displays? Not useful, and the news is out of date. The news item displayed references a feature to be added to the 'upcoming version 6.0'. Well, it's not exactly upcoming as I am using it. Anyhow, don't really need more clutter, or Avast grabbing news every time I open the control panel.

I'm not using the free version, I'm using the Pro version, a 3 year licence...so I've already paid  :)

What firewall?

IIRC you can block avastUI from connecting, and it will prevent the news (and ad in free version)

EDIT: I think there was an option at one point to turn this off, can't remember whether it is still there, or where it was...

That's right. ;)

Will that affect anything else? I just monitored TCP AvastUI.exe connects to program.avast.com over https. Is this where it's grabbing the news from? I don't want to block anything else. If that is singularly for updating the news I'll stick it in hosts.

Well, just test it. You can undo it easily. ;)
I have no problems here.

Well I monitored TCP for a little while, checked for Avast updates from the tray, and within an open AvastUI, and skirted around the Avasts settings, and no, blocking AvastUI.exe doesn't affect anything else, so just blocked the UI in my firewall. Updates are grabbed via another Avast process so all is well. And no more out-of-date news annoyance.  :)

Thanks.

just open the main gui window (summary) up at the top right click settings and right there under basic settings uncheck "show remote content in avast! user interface" then close and re-open it up it should be gone now.

+1. This is the easier way to do it.

Good grief! Must be blind as a bat. Can't believe I didn't notice it. Anyway, yes, that's definitely a better option. Thanks very much for that.
