Avast driver conflicts with XP ??
« on: July 18, 2003, 05:38:34 AM »
Being relatively new to computers, my knowlege of them is rather limited, so hopefully someone can shed some light on my problem, recently my computer crashed, and Microsoft notified me immediately stating that the problem was a driver conflict with windows XP, the only things I have installed recently have been a new printer, a program called Kazaa, and the Avast4 antivirus program, I have unistalled Kazaa and the new printer, but the problem is still there although not as bad, after around 5 hours of running, my screensavers stop working, and all the icons on my desktop, together with any print disappear, has anybody else experienced this with Avast4? I am reluctant to delete it, as it has saved me from a virus already, and seems to be working fine, updating itself daily etc. I would appeciate any advice that may solve my dilema. Regards.

Hi,

First thing I would recommend ( not as a techie) is to get hold of a program like ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) and scan the system for spyware with the latest updates.
kazza and such programs do nasty things to the computer in my experience.   >:( some info. http://www.spychecker.com/spyware.html
This is just my opinion.  :D

zenbar2000,

what do you mean by 'crashed'? A blue-screen/reboot? If so, look in the \windows\minidump folder if there are any files. If there are, you can send me the most recent one - and I can have a look at what really happened...

BTW what version of avast do you have?

Thanks

Ya, I installed Avast 2 days ago and have had a couple of blue screens already... this is the message I get:

stop 0x00000050 ( 0xE1289000, 0x00000001, 0xEEB1879E, 0x00000001)
asWMon.sys address EEB1879E base at EEB1600 datestamp Bf014b9b

If you really want to use Kazaa, and be aware of the dangers it includes, do the following,

Uninstall the orginal Kazaa.

And download Kazaa lite.

http://www.kazaalite.tk/

It's the same, but stripped naked from Spy & adware.

The downloads are faster also, as it has no limit bandwith protection etc..
