RPC Error - possible fix?
« on: September 12, 2004, 03:32:39 PM »
While working on a different problem, I think I inadvertently stumbled
on the fix for this.

I was having the same problems as everyone - long boot times, Avast!
freezing for 30 seconds and reporting an RPC error. I tried all the fixes
in this forum, including uninstall/reinstall, setting RPC to automatic, etc...
Nothing worked. I had given up. (Note that all these problems started
with installing SP2 - thanks, Microsoft!)

Just yesterday, I was trying to speed up my broadband connection,
which has gotten sluggish lately. Nowhere near Comcast's advertised
3000kbps. I applied the registry tweaks from Speedguide.net, and
set up QOS Packet Scheduler according to their specs.

Now, I've booted several times since, and no RPC error. Boot times are
what they should be.

I have no idea which tweak, if any, did the trick.

I'm attaching a text file with the registry changes, which anyone can
rename to a .reg file to install them all at once. (Not do them manually
in regedit, like I did). For the QoS changes, you'll need to go to
Speedguide.net, and set them yourself. Remember: These are
for Win2000/XP only. As always, set a system restore point, or back up
your registry before applying these changes.
