As with most computer problems, this one seems to have just fixed itself.  Without doing anything on my end I opened Avast and hit update and it went through (internets been up all day with no probs, maybe a checksum problem between the update server and client who knows.)  I still can't seem to open the real time shields tab though.  Here is the log.

Your previous updates return "package broken". Internet hickup?
The last one worked and you've got your antivirus updated. Did you boot after that?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
