Hi all, new here and I was going to post in a previous thread but it said I should start a new topic.

I have just been infected with these nightmare things on my work computer. I have run full and boot scans with Avast, but unfortunately didn't find this page until after I had done this.

The second scan has only shown one infected file (so far), but I'm not technically minded enough to know what the details mean.

My question really is, I have another computer I can use but will have to move my work folders to it as I have no internet left on the work one.

Is it OK to move folders over as long as the external drive they are on does not contain any .exe or .dll files (my work stuff is mostly word and excel files) as I don't want to risk passing anything on to the clean computer

It's never a good idea to move files from an infected computer, to a new one. excel and word files can contain viruses (usually in macros, but can be in other forms)

I personally would say not to transfer them.

P.S. Externals (hard drives, usb drives, etc) can be infected by viruses/malware, just by being plugged into the infected computer. you know that window that (usually) pops up asking what you would like to do with your external device? the malware infects that autorun.exe file and copies hidden virus files into your drive.

Well I've deleted anything program-related that was in there as I believe these things tuck into your exe and dll files and scanned the drive and it is returning no hits for any unpleasant files.  Had to do a full factory reset on the computer and it seems to have worked.

Problem is its my only copy of all my work files (did have them on another laptop but my ex decided she wanted it last week so I had to take all my stuff off, typical eh!!) and I have to get them on to the computer I am using as I use a lot of excel stuff for calculating costs for clients
