Windows Xp and Avast mail shield with pop ssl
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:40:19 PM »
Hello,
I have problem with mail shield under Windows Xp.
When i configure Thunderbird to do not use encryption with pop and smtp, and Avast to use ssl on pop and smtp i have error in connection to mail server. System is fresh and clean with newest version of Thunderbird and Avast 6.0.1000. I'm using only built in Windows Xp firewall, but disabling does not change anything.
I would like to add that the mail shield works great on Windows 7.

Avast log:
2011-03-08   12:38:27   00000674:   PRNG not seeded with enough data
2011-03-08   12:38:27   00000674:   Cannot establish SSL with POP server 84.201.208.50:995, SSL_connect error 5

Please provide screenshot of TBird server settings page and of avast gui server settings so we can have a look into it.

Ok, these are my settings. All these pop3 servers visible on Avast screen do not work.

Okay, try this:

Make sure that in TBird you have selected no SSL for all the accounts.
Make sure to close down TBird.
From Avast GUI, delete all the server entries.
Reboot.
Start TBird and try to receive mails. Avast should automatically find the settings and add them to the list.

If this does not help, then you could try a repair installation.

Go to control panel, software, doubleclick the avast installer, select repair (you might need to scroll to the bottom of the list to find repair option).
When finished, reboot.

Try again.

Still the same.
Avast added servers, but without encryption (gmail do not added and of course not working) and they working but only beacuse these mail servers do not require ssl connection. After change in avast config to use ssl is still a connection error on all accounts.
I think is a problem with Avast under Win Xp because under Win 7 everything works fine.

No it is not. It is working fine on my XP system.

If you disable mailscanning and set TBird to SSL, does it work?
PRNG is a Random Number Generator provided by XP and needed for SSL, and this seems to cause the problem...

You have Service Pack 3 installed? and TBird latest version (as from yesterday 3.09)? Date / Time Settings of System correct?

Yes, 3.1.9... thx.

Did you try the repair option? BTW, what version of Avast? Try this one: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1021/setup_av_free.exe
You can install over the existing, it is a pre-release of the soon to be released new version.

Yes, I tried repair option.
Avast version was latest stable from Avast website, and now is beta from Your link.
And still the same errors :(

This is weird.
I hear of this error the first time ever.
Hang on, I'll try to get a mod/dev to look at it.

Really? Then try to search the forums - there are a plenty of related topics...
Here's mine, for example:

Okay, so there are more...

However, I encounter this "unfixable" error for the first time.

Most of the posters with "can't send / receive mail" just have the wrong settings.

I'm sorry I can't help in this specific case. Again: I have installed Avast on many friends systems with XP and never had this problem.  :-\

Ok, then the only thing I can do is turn off mail shield.
Thanks for your help.
