Won't finish a scan
« on: March 11, 2011, 02:41:16 AM »
Uploaded AVAST, tried to run a full scan, found my computer waiting for me to log on, tried running a quick scan with with same result. Scanning begins then somewhere along the line it shuts down & reboots. I tried running Norton & had serious problems with it so I had to uninstall in safe mode. I have had an email virus lately which hacked my email addresses & sent everyone solicitations for Viagra. Any ideas or suggestions?

Welcome to the forums Prophead,

Have you tried initiating a boot time scan? If not, then please do so.

1 Double clc\ickc avast! desktop icon
2 Click Scan Computer
3 Click Boot-time Scan
4 Click Schedule now

Please post back an update about this issue. Thank you.
Windows 7 (64-bit) Home Premium SP1

Hi - I am having the same problem - I too will try to schedule a boot scan.   I have noticed reboots sometimes without attempting a scan so in debugging I have run SFC /scannow to try to verify Windows (XP home), and chkdsk /F from a boot.  Both completed - SFC did not report anything, and chkdsk ran overnight (1.5 terabyte drive) so I did not notice if it had repaired any sectors.  The PC seems to run normally (not slow either - dual core 2.6 ghz and 4 gigs memory), but if I try the quickscan I get either totally locked or an instant reboot.   I will try the scheduled scan tonight.

I tried the boot scan of all drives, which ran fine.   I then tried the quick scan again, and Avast 6.0 crashed in aswsp.sys - stop 0000008E.   I read about others crashing there too, and an Avast support person saying they have a program bug.   I will see about updating to the program, but I just installed the most current version from Avast just last night.
So I doubt there is any newer ones.

I found one instance of someone fixing this issue with Avast.  They found bad memory by using memcheck86.  I tried that, and did not find any bad memory.  So I used the avast uninstaller utility to get it off my PC, and then I installed AVG virus protection (also free).  The Pc no longer crashes.
