High CPU Usage
« on: September 17, 2004, 12:37:06 PM »
I am creating a Photo CD's of homes for Real Estate agents. After creating the CD and while playing it AVAST CPU percentage is extremely high.  Combined with the photo software and AVAST my CPU is at 100%.

To debug I unloaded AVAST and installed AVG AnitVirus software. It works just fine. No CPU usage from AVG.

SYSTEM

XP PRO SP2 installed
P III 733

I've used AVAST for at least a year and hate to use another product.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

How is it possible to offer suggestions, which could lead to a resolution of the problem when you have already uninstalled avast.

1. You can't apply any suggestions we offer to avast.
2. You cant give us any information about the settings that you had within avast.
3. You can't or didn't tell us what the split of CPU usage, photo software/avast making up the 100%.
4. You used avast for a year with no problems, what changed, your settings, the photo program, xp sp2, what?

I think you have thrown the baby out with the bath water, AVG is lighter (but only slightly, no appreciable change on my system having dumped AVG), because I believe it does much less, the default setting scan very little.

Without avast on your system it is impossible to help resolve an issue supposedly involving avast!

Perhaps Avast scan better than AVG :D (pretty sure about that)

My suggestion:
Remove AVG, put Avast back on.
Give us information we can work with like:
- Avast version
- What settings in Avast
- vps version
- Operating system and service packs
- What photo software
- What else is running

Actually, there was a very simple solution to your problem.
As long as you're not connected to the net, not opening any e-mail and are working with files you know are clean, all you would have had to do is pause the standard shield till you finish your Photo Project.
I just went thru that while compiling a DVD of photos and music.
Hope it helps.

I'm finding the same problem erractically  :(
Sometimes ashServ.exe start using 50%-90% of CPU and stays there  :P
Logoff does not help  :'(
Using AEC for closing/restarting avast does not help either  :'(
Only booting...

I'm quite sure there is a SP2 drive or dll implication...  :-\
Did you remember that very old thread about this? (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=1477;start=msg11136#msg11136)

I was never able to 'use' that debug program and get the data to help Alwil on this... Maybe some one could explain me how can I get the graphic information you could see there  ::)

How often is "sometimes"?
It never happened before SP2 to you?

Generally after some time 'idle' (I mean, just the screen saver).
I get back to the computer, wait for the end of the 'blue' panel of avast screen saver and things become to beee veeeryyyy slooooow  :P
Logoff does not help. Only Boot  :'(

Sure it happened  :'(
But what can I say... the last 'big' changes were SP2 and now it's being more frequent than before... Can I monitore it with more details than using just task manager? Again, it's not a matter of RAM (1 Gb) that is almost free at that time. Problem is the processor (P4 2,4 GHz  :'().

So, is it possible to say that the problem appears always only after the screen-saver has been running?

Sorry... I can't assure that because it happens in other conditions.
I'll try to get a list of processes running when it occurs and try to post or send to you.
