My comment was directed at YoKenny's post above mine as simply going back isn't going to help finding the cause for a resolution.
Well as soon as I load SpeedFan the avast! ball rotated like crazy as the File Shield was scanning its access to my hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. information retreval.
So both Acronis True Image Home 2011 and SpeedFan had problems! :'(
I don't use True Image, but do Use Drive Image (DI), but I don't allow that to run on boot as DI doesn't do incremental images. I just do a manual image backup once a week and I have another little tool called Mirror (mirror.exe) 112KB that I manually run several times a day (batch file) for backing up my data files, emails, bookmarks, etc. This as its name suggests mirrors your existing data files in an alternate location. So no problems as both of these are passive until run.
I used to use speedfan some years ago, but never felt it that useful, so I never kept it up to date and removed it. Surely you don't have it running all the time, but only on-demand ?
I saw this on the speedfan faq:
CPU usage goes very high and/or my screen shows odd things
This can occasionally happen if you have an nVidia video card and you are using some software combination. Due to the lack of documentation, the only option is to use the /NONVIDIAI2C command line switch when running SpeedFan. You can find further info about it in
Perhaps this might help you (If using Nvidia card/chip) as high CPU would be indicative of activity and avast being forced to scan that activity.
