fake update pop-up

Whenever avast updates automatically, you get a pop up in the corner of the monitor with that nice lady saying that the update has been complete.  NOW, I'm getting a pop up telling me to update.  I know its fake.  When I run the virus scanner, it tells me it cannot scan the virus folder for the avast system.

Anyone know what I'm talking about and if so, how to fix this?

What does the popup look like?

If it is blue, telling you to update then it is likely to be correct.

Attached is a genuine program update popup.

If not, can you provide a screenshot?

Please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

That's the one.  But I made the mistake of clicking on that before and it wouldn't let me into avast at all.  I had to uninstall and reinstall avast just to get it to work again.  Then I couldn't get into any files.  It made a mess.

So you upgraded from a previous version to the current version of Avast.  What was your previous version?

Have you tried an Avast Repair:
XP Users:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

Vista & Win7 Users:
-   Control Panel
-   Programs & Features
-   Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
-   Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
-   Click Next and follow.
-   Reboot.

If the Repair fails to work, I would suggest an Avast uninstall/clean install: https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=730&nav=0,2 - uninstall each version and product of Avast you had on this machine, then reboot.
