Thankfully,

I have not had this issue where I have needed to go into Safe Mode.  But under most circumstances, should users be able to boot their computer in safe mode and update Avast?  Obviously needing to do this if their computer is hosed and can't get into normal mode.  (I will use Windows XP as an example)

1.) Boot into Safe Mode

2.) Select Safe Mode WITH NETWORKING

3.) Update Avast under this environment

4.) Do Full Scans and schedule Boot Time Scans.

5.) Restart the computer and do Boot Time scans when previously being in safe mode.

avast! does not run in safe mode, since the drivers are not loaded and the service is not running. Why? Erm, if something goes wrong with install or avast! conflicts with something else, it would render your computer permanently unbootable.

I don't have an actual PC handy to try. On a virtual PC with XP Pro SP3 in safe mode with networking I couldn't get it to updated but it does scan. It must be started manually.

I honestly don't know if it would update in a virtual environment, even if avast would update from safe mode.
