BSOD 0x000007F, 0x0000000000000008

Hi all,

This is more of a "bug report" than a question. My computer recently started to BSOD on me whenever I try to transfer files via smb via gigabit ethernet. I isolated the problem to avast as previously the computer will crash consistently whenever I try to move files via ethernet, however, after uninstalling the program it does not happen at all.

I looked through the web for the stop codes 0x000007F, 0x0000000000000008 and it appears that ZoneAlarm had similar problems. Check out these links:

I guess my main question now is, how may I submit a bug report so that I can assist in the improvement of my favorite antivirus program? Thanks in advance.

Just an update, it doesn't seem that avast is causing the problem. I uninstalled avast and for a moment though the problem was fixed, however, the computer is yet again BSOD'ing on me. I'll keep posting on this thread.

send me a couple of the latest minidumps (\Windows\Minidump folder) to kurtin@avast.com
7F/8 usually means a conflict between two drivers (i.e. "double fault")

what's your OS?

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, whenever it BSOD's it tells me that it's collecting information for dump, but it doesn't actually start the dump process. I would wait about 5 minutes and it would just hang there. The HDD light doesn't do anything either.

Because of this, the latest dumpfiles that I have on my HDD is from January, so clearly it won't contain any useful information for this problem.

The really frustrating thing is that the NIC seemed to start acting up on its own without any provocation. The only hardware changes I can recall making is a 4-bay raid5 enclosure I enclosure I recently began to use and also updating the drivers for my ATI HD5000 series graphics card. It would only crash when I try to move files via windows file sharing (smb) and not when I have it connected to the router. (It won't crash if I do the file transfer via wireless)

Again, any input or past experiences on problems like this would be greatly appreciated. I'll keep you guys posted.

EDIT:

I tried doing a file transfer using Filezilla and filezilla server (using the FTP protocol) and it seemed to do the trick- no BSOD's no trouble. So it seems that the problem only occurs when I try to transfer files using SMB (windows file sharing) and between this PC and my macbook, peer to peer without any routers in between.

As of now this isn' a pressing problem for me now since I can start transferring files properly again but it'll be nice if I can get it fixed somehow... it's a bit uncomfortable to have this lingering problem lurking in your computer.
