Windows 2000 - is there a good free AV product ?
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:40:50 PM »
I have an old PC with Windows 2000 Pro and it runs great for someone who needs email and internet.  I was going to give it away to the local church resale store but I wanted to put some kind of AV on it.   I usually do this with XP and Vista but this one is older but still very usable.   Any suggestions?

PS I did try Avast and no it wouldn't let me register it.

Avast works just fine with W2000 SP4 Rollup 1. Specify what you mean by "wouldn't let me register it."

Well, the Avast web site does not say it works on 2000 and when I installed it, the registration page would come up and hand on the 'collecting information' window and would never let me register.  Can anyone confirm that 2000 Pro is ok ?  And how do I get around the inability to register ?

Thanks

From the Avast web site .......

"Please note that avast! Internet Security runs only on PCs with Windows XP and newer. Older Windows operating systems (Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000) are not supported."

As said, it works just fine on Windows 2000, confirmed by lots of people here. You can register it online: http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php if you are using the Free version and the GUI registration does not work for you for whatever weird reason. Otherwise you got the license key via email.

Hi Stang,

one of the supported operating systems for avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Free Antivirus 6.x is Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4.
avast! Internet Security runs only on PCs with Windows XP and newer.

I use the Free AV V.6 with Windows 2000 Professional SP4 for myself and it works perfectly with this OS! :D

Well I re-installed v6 (free) and I registered manually and it seems to be working fine.

Confusing cuz this is right off the Avast site (link I posted above) and it says no on the free version.....

You are correct.  See the Avast link for v.6.0: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab2.  It will work on Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or higher).

Sorry, not really true.
Free/Pro/AIS v6 are not officially supported on Win2000 (as stated on the Avast website), however they will run if SP4 and Rollup 1 are installed on the system (as experienced and confirmed by users).

Hello Zyndstoff!

Here is an extract from the avast support webpage:

https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=750&nav=0,1#idt_01

"What are the supported operating systems for avast! 6.x ?

The supported operating systems for avast! Internet Security 6.x are Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit).

The supported operating systems for avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Free Antivirus 6.x are Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4, Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit).

Note:
The above means that avast! 6.x isn't supported (isn't compatible, can't be installed and won't run) on DOS, Microsoft Windows 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, or any others which aren't specified as supported."

So in my opinion is that Windows 2000 IS SUPPORTED for avast! Free & Pro.

Regards!

This is where downloaders come and look, the official Avast website.

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab2

There is obviously a discrepancy on Avast sites.

@Zyndstoff:
It is just a discrepancy in some cases...
Your Link shows the Download of all 3 products (Free, Pro & IS). And Windows 2000 is compatible with Free & Pro only.

@Asyn:
I think I'm on the way to become a "Windows 2000-specialist".  :D
