Okay, it is most definetly the problem of having run two resident AV products simultaneously.

You should run the Avira removal tool

Maybe then run CCleaner.

Delete all leftover Avira folders (if any, make sure also show hidden files are shown in explorer)

Check your PC Date/Time settings and correct if necessary

Reboot

Make a repair installation of Avast (or even better from scratch...)

Reboot.

Test and report back, please.

I uninstalled Avira and re-installed it without the real-time module, and that solved the problem: Avast updates again. You were right, the two online scanner were causing a conflict. Guess I'll be using Avira only for on-demand scans from now on.

btw is there a way to edit the title? id like [SOLVED] to be added to guide people here with similar problems. i might be lame but i could not find an option and im the topic starter... or only admins have the right?

You can go back to your first post, click the Modify button in the post, here you can change the Title/Subject adding [SOLVED] or [RESOLVED] to the beginning or end of the existing title. As in the example I have placed in my posts Subject.
