What settings are you using? And, what version are you using? Which update, definitions or program?
What other security software are you using or ever had in the past?
You need to provide more information so we can help.
From the GUI upper right corner click "settings"...click "update".
Or try a repair. Control panel...add/remove...double click "avast"...scroll down click "repair".

This is often an indication that your firewall is blocking avast.

What is your Operating System - What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?

What happens if you try a manual update, avastUI, Maintenance, Update, Update engine and virus definitions ?

Para-Noid is right. You need to give us more info. Oh, and by the way, welcome to the forum.

Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

It's always a good thing to check the "Connection" and "Proxy" settings first. (see screenshot)
