Welcome arnous,

do you mean avast! is closing down with an error message?
your machine hangs?

First we need some info about your operating system, which version of Windows you are using, which version of avast! and the last update definition you are using.

There are many here who can help you if they have the correct information first.

ok,
i'm using windows xp sp1, avast! 4.1 home edition and my av is up to date (0440-2, 29/09/2004).
i have no error message, the problem is that the scan doesn't progress and i'm obliged to cancel it manually after few minutes.

arnous, is the file on your local machine or on a cd or dvd?

and you are choosing to manually scan?  Right click scan with avast! on the file?

What is the file extension?  Movie file, iso file etc?

600 meg, I think that would be normal if it had to examine each file.

What kind of file was it, this is for reference of other users who might have the same problem with the time delay.  It's asking a lot of any anti-virus programme to verify files that large with different extensions/compacted etc.  so much depends on system speed and memory.

Good that the the file was OK though!

If you want and you're sure the file is clean, why don't you include it in the list of 'excluded' files (see Settings > Exclusions)  ;)

a .mpg file! but it takes about 2minutes to scan one file. i've never seen that before (i've been using avg 6.0 free edition before and i've never had to wait so long for scanning one file). i have P4 processor 3Ghz, 512 Mo DDR RAM.
well, i'm happy that it's not a bug in avast!

thank you for your replies!

It's good that avast! opens mpg file files and checks them, some anti-virus programmes don't and assume that they are safe.  Hence the faster scans.

Of course, that was the first time  ;)
Now, you can make an on-line scanning if you want or even use a backup scanner (not resident) to check it. Anyway, I won't be so worried about this file.
Why avast is taking it so long? Probably you're scanning the 'whole' file without extension detection or low sensibility. All file will be scanned and not only the 'potential infected ones' (which is probably what happens with the other quick scanners)  :)
