Avast and HIPS!
« on: April 19, 2011, 07:58:40 AM »
I was just wondering, most of the antivirus companies started using HIPS like COMODO, Kaspersky, Eset(with the upcoming version 5), etc. But AVAST still has not introduced HIPS. Will AVAST introduce HIPS v7? Is it necessary for an antivirus to have HIPS??

Not that I have heard of, they never seem to be going in that direction.

Not at all.  It is just another way of creating an additional layer of defense outside of the traditional virus signature approach.  Avast! instead goes with behavior shield/heuristics, and most recently an auto-sandbox.

Probably not as they have gone the behavioral monitor route, if you want a hips most firewalls now include them or you can get winpatrol.

WinPatrol is very good even the free version:

Avast went with a BB cause its more user friendly. HIPS are not user friendly but if you like HIPS so much then go with GesWall. Norton also uses a BB called Sonar.

For those non techie people:

BB = Behavior Blocker
HIPS = Host Intrusion Prevention System

I'm moving the topic a little, but what are your thoughts on the Avast firewall? I don't recall anyone discussing the subject but I probably just missed it. Just curious...thanks.

The Avast firewall is still very new which makes it rather weak. If your current OS is Windows 7 then your all set with Windows Firewall.

What does the age of the firewall have to do with it's strength or lack thereof ???
What makes the Windows firewall stronger ???

If you have to ask that bob then its not worth explaining. Just look at Avast's scores over at Matousec and it explains all.
