MSVCR70.DLL
« on: October 03, 2004, 04:07:37 PM »
I use Avast since a week and am satisfied with it. Yesterday, Avast can't work, its icons disappeared next to the clock and I get error message when I open my computer saying this application can't run because MSVCR70.dll can"t be found and the reinstallation should correct this problem.
So I check my files and see that MSVCR70.dll is in system 32 and Microsoft Net (not in the folder AVAST). I also downloaded Avast4 again but always the same error.

Try a repair of Avast.

control panel > software > add/remove > avast > repair.

If that fails, remove Avast with the Uninstall Util, reboot and reinstall.

Vlk said this in the past:

avast was compiled using MS Visual Studio.NET, that is, for the case of avast, these files would be called msvcr70.dll and msvcp70.dll.

Igor said this in the past:

Quote
That's a common Microsoft library and avast! certainly needs it (and the installer should put it there).
I suggest to try to repair avast! from the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs applet; and if it won't work, download the installer from the web and use it to repair the installation.

I think Eddy's suggestion is a good one... Did you try?
What version of avast are you using?

Reinstalled with succes (impossible to repair). I first uninstalled then rebooted and reinstalled and rebooted. Before my message, I reinstalled without uninstalling and reboot.

That runs now. But I wonder why this file was not found. It was in system32 when the windows opened and a message said msvcr70.ddl was not found. Three days ago avast detected a trojan from a loaded game of my son. My son wasn't able to cancel the infected file and I had to cancel it by themalware scanner a2 after hours. Can a trojan desactive avast ?

Can a trojan desactive avast ?

There were a lot of discussion about this in the past.
Some user get frightened when discover that a trojan/virus can make much more than they could ever dream...
But, I think, in this case could be that the file get corrupted by that trojan/virus  :P
Glad to know you're ok now  8)

Well the file was there, but most likely not properly registered in the registry. So it was not a matter of not found physically, but more like not found virtually.

Something like when you travel. The place (city/town) is there, but is not on any road map. ;)

Thank you for your replies
I understood the difference between physically and virtuality but why that ? Why it hasn"t found the file ?
Will this problem recur ?  I saw a new warning message this morning when I  turn my computer off but I have not enough time to read it. I turn it on and avast was not disappeared.
Before having Avast4 on my computer, I had never this kind of issue.

There is still a warning message just when I turn my computer off. I don't manage to see what it means. Never mind. All seems OK for the moment in the virtual life of my computer  :)

Maybe I'll send you a new message soon but I don't hope so.

You should be able to see the error/message in the system log or the event log.

Right click "my computer" > choose manage
