Aside from the fact that it is not running on your system, wouldn't the fact that it's running perfectly on my PC under Win 7 x64 Pro SP1 tell you something?

It's not broken.
A bug can affect one person's installation and not another's, you know.

Exactly - that's what I'm trying to say. But since you have a clean Windows installation as you stated and you are the only one to report this issue, it is most probably a faulty Win installation on your system or a faulty download on your side.
Avast 6 is not broken by design - if that were so, you couldn't even reach this forum because of heavy user traffic due to complaints. This version was officially released yesterday, so several millions of users have already downloaded and installed it.

@ Steven Gail (aka Zyndstoff), your link didn't work for me.

@ Nilbog,

I assume you are using Windows Firewall from your lack of responding to my question?

Here is how to uninstall and do a clean install of Avast:

1.Download Free:http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free:

9. Update the Avast definitions.
