See if a repair of Avast solves it.
start > control panel > software > Avast > change

You never hear those people for who it is working without problems, and they are in the majority ;D

Personally I rather would have had only the security patches/updates instead of the all other options SP2 has added.

I've noticed that the english version of sp2 gives much more problems than eg the Dutch version. Strange but true.

A lot of problems that appears to be caused by sp2, are in fact caused by the users themselfs. Notreading instructions/manuals, setting the wrong options in applications, things like that.

Why trying to run a dos(based) application on a NT system? Doesn't normally make much sense, but people still do that.

People are still using old versions of applications, not updating their applications and such. So you can expect to run into trouble sometime.

imho sp2 is a good thing.

Agreed, best thing people can do is a clean installation of XP.
But many people don't know how to properly install a OS :-\

As owner of a computer repair store, I use the original Windows cd with SP2 on it. No need to slipstream for me :D

Slightly off-topic, but ...

Alas, there were some excellent apps, especially games, written for DOS which never got re-written for Win, especially the NT versions.  Many of them would still manage OK under 98SE, which still retained quite a bit of DOS even if not as the OS, but with, e.g., XP, those are unfortunately now a total write-off.
