Threat Detected - Help !

I bought my Dell Latitude computer reconditioned from Ebay,
over a year ago.  It came ready installed with The Free Avast Anti-Virus on it. Absolutely no probs, that is until today    This Alert message keeps popping up on my screen Saying "   Threat has been detected "   It keeps on popping up, with annoying alarm noises, stating the threat has been blocked. Yet it still continues to pop up. What do I do

Update your avast and restart, should fix it.

1. What version of avast are you using?

2. What pop up virus alerts are you getting?. Is it just happening when you start the computer & not online or offline to the internet!.

3. We need to know what operating system you are using? & did the computer have any other antivirus on it before avast!(Nortons/ macafee have removal tools)etc. Dells can be preloaded with macafee which can leave traces in the registry and conflict.

If it is happening offline you might have background running malware process going off?.
Suggest download Malware bytes antispyware free and run that on full scan and remove what that finds.
