avast! 6.0.1091 & IE WebRep feature issue... [IE6]
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:08:41 AM »
Hi,

I've been using previous beta version of avast! (6.0.1044) and updated to stable version (6.0.1091). With previous version avast! WebRep was working fine with IE (v6). But after updating to stable version now WebRep feature not working with IE.

I'm not an IE dependent anyway, but just wanted to let you know the problem.

Cheers...

IE6 is not supported any more.

Update to at least IE8.

What will the user gain with such an outdated browser + a non security related feature as WebRep?

There's no problem, imo.
Users have to keep their systems updated.

Yep, I'm not an IE user :) anyway just wanted to let you know guys. But I think some people wonder why it's not working with IE 6 (mostly non-IT guys just after installing windows XP). So avast! better state it somewhere that WebRep is working with only IE 8+. Then they won't think it as a bug anyway. Simple mistake can lead to loss of reputation sometimes :)

I suggest it's better if avast! WebRep shows (for IE 6 users) that browser not supported and provide a hint to update it to IE 8+ rather than showing "Browser not installed" (see below)

Cheers...

You are an IE user as IE is used througout all of Windows.

Please read
Quote
Windows Explorer is a file manager application that is included with releases of the Microsoft Windows operating system from Windows 95 onwards. It provides a graphical user interface for accessing the file systems. It is also the component of the operating system that presents many user interface items on the monitor such as the taskbar and desktop. Controlling the computer is possible without Windows Explorer running (for example, the File | Run command in Task Manager on NT-derived versions of Windows will function without it, as will commands typed in a command prompt window). It is sometimes referred to as the Windows Shell, explorer.exe, or simply “Explorer”.

Plus avast! needs XP SP2 at a minimum that includes IE7
What are the supported operating systems for avast! 6.x ?

FWIW, I too use IE6, but only for Windows Update... in general, I don't like IE, so no need to go to either IE7 or IE8 (XP PRO SP3, so no IE9).

IE is so embedded into the Windows OS that it affects the security of Windows itself.  Also, many programs that access the internet do so using various components of IE.

I also only use IE for Windows Update, much preferring Firefox with the extensions I've selected.  If IE 6 is the latest installed, then that Windows install is very vulnerable.

Why move off of Internet Explorer 6?
There are many benefits of upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer – improved speed, tabbed browsing, and better privacy settings to name a few.

The web has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The browser has evolved to adapt to new web technologies, and the latest versions of Internet Explorer help protect you from new attacks and threats.

We recommend that Internet Explorer 6 users upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer for a safer browsing experience.

An user becomes an IE user by using IE, not by just having IE by default with Windows :) Either you can remove it OR leave it.
