After updating Avast program from 6.0.1000 when asked if I wanted to restart said yes and then Windows shuts down OK.
Reboots OK to Windows starting does not get to the welcome screen then restarts  the screen giving option to boot in to safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. boot into safe mode with networking All is OK Avast seems to work ran virus scan nothing . Restarted and  still the above error Rebooted into safe mode and uninstalled Avast and Lo and behold every thing normal.
Windows XP sevice pack 3 and all updates are uptodate. Have been running AVG as well for several Years no conflict

I would say that if you have been running avast and avg together then you have been lucky in the past but this is obviously your problem now so best to delet both of your av's then go to the av vender's site and get there removal tool to clean up any leftovers before reinstalling whatever av you wish to have.

Sooner or later, the conflict appears.
When you think you're more protected in fact is the opposite.
AVG Remover can be downloaded here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

AVG and AVAST noooooooooooo...

AVG is a system hog, use avast....

If you are OK with AVG, use it, no problem... Remember only one real time shield at a time...

If you want you can disable the real time protection in any one of the av, and use it for on demand scanning only....

No, you need to actually uninstall the other AV since having 2 AV's will create problems since the drivers and registries are still in the machine even if they are "not active."  So uninstalling the AV not being used is your answer -- use the vendor's uninstaller tool, then reboot your machine.  Clean up you machine with something like CCleaner Slim Version http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds – 4th option down afterwards, then reinstall the AV you want.
