email problem
« on: October 06, 2004, 06:13:20 PM »
I am able to do anything on the internet, however, whenever I go to check my email, its an exchange server, I can't open my messages.  Anyone know whats wrong? That is the only problem I am having.  I have XP home, I just installed the latest version of avast home.  Thanks for any help ???

What email program are you using (assume MS Outlook {not OE}?

If MS Outlook, have you got the Outlook/Exchange provider enabled?

If MS Outlook, does the plug-in for avast show in MS Outlook?

Have you had any error messages displayed 'I can't open my messages?' If so, what are they?

Have you checked the avast help file, Resident Protection - "Outlook/Exchange" - Provider Settings

It is neither, it is through my college, St. Michael's.  All that happens is I click the message and it does not open.  I am able to open it from anyother computer at school, but not from my own computer ever sense I installed avast...

@Jenny7568

Hiya, this might be a policy if you are using your college's network server, do you have a help desk or sys admin who administers your internet access?

Jenn,

At first thought, I would check to see that Avast has correctly configured you email settings within MS Outlook.

Did you run the "Mail Protection Wizard" when you installed Avast?

Go into the Start/Programs/Avast folder and click on Mail Protection Wizard.  Fill in the information as requested.
You will need to know Adelphia's POP and SMTP address cxodes such as Jenn.pop3.adelphia.net or something similar.

Let me know if you have difficulty.

K Jenny just thought it might be a network policy set by your college.

We'll need some more details about your connection first, specifically your isp's policy and settings with regards to smtp and pop settings.  DON'T post the details of your acct, just your settings.

I.E. smtp.adelphia.com
pop.adelphia.com or mail.adelphia.com

There are lots of threads here about email configurations and I'm sure lots of users who will help you.

You'll need to look in accounts in your email programme (probably from the "tools" menu)

Have you done a search here yet about manual email settings?

If you find some of the changes you might have to make too daunting, let us know and lots of us can walk you through it.

finally, you have tried ....start/all programmes/avast/mail protection wizard haven't you?  I'll get my coat and a taxi if you have, but sometimes users don't know about the email wizard and to try it first.

Edit.

Try looking here for your email settings for the avast wizard

A web based email,  I don't think avast! has any problems scanning them with the standard shield set to high.  What programme do you use to get your email? Is it something specific to your isp, or do you just open a browser window and log in to get your mail?
