Just downgraded from 6 to 5
« on: May 02, 2011, 08:50:24 AM »
I've been using avast 5 for some time without problems on XP SP3 however at the start of April Explorer on my system started freezing for no apparent reason. Other apps would work until they accessed the disk at which point they too would freeze.

I traced this to avast and downgraded to latest v5 and the problem has gone.

Is it likely this has been fixed in the latest v6?

Thanks,
James

James, so that we can help trouble shoot your problem better, can you give us some more information:

1.   What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
2.   What version of Avast did you install?  6.0.1091?
3.   What product of Avast did you install?  Free, Pro, AIS?
4.   What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
- Antivirus (AV)
- Firewall (FW)
- Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
- Other security software (example: Malwarebytes, etc.)
- If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or  another way)?

Snap, no issues here in 6.0.1091, but then again I didn't have any problems with explorer freezing even with the 6.0 beta and pre-release builds on my XP Pro SP3 system.

@ SafeSurf
If the OP has XP SP3 it can't be 64bit as XP Pro 64bit is only at SP2.

SafeSurf,
Hopefully this will help:
1.   What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
XP32 SP3
2.   What version of Avast did you install?  6.0.1091?
Can't tell now I've removed it - Not the current 6 release but the previous non-beta version. Is there a log file I can check to confirm the version?
3.   What product of Avast did you install?  Free, Pro, AIS?
Free
4.   What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:

AV - in the past McAfee Enterprise and AVG (removed when the latest version came out and switched to Avast
FW - default Windows
Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
None
Other security software (example: Malwarebytes, etc.)
None
If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or  another way)?
Vendors uninstall

Thanks for the responses all, now I'm back on 5.x my system is once again rock steady with no explorer/disk access lockups.

- Ensure that all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8.x (or higher) Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

I know there are removal tools for the various McAfee Consumer products at their web site, but I don't know if there is a similar removal tool for the enterprise version. Might be worth a look at these - see http://www.askvg.com/ultimate-collection-of-uninstallers-removal-tools-for-all-popular-anti-virus-software/ and http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

After ensuring any remnants are gone you could try version 6.0.1091 again (clean install).
