Regarding the development of 27 April, is the PDF engine in the free version of Avast?

No.No PDF engine available in any of avast! products but avast! has a shield called "Behavioral shield".It will monitor suspicious activities in your computer including PDF exploit and currently the behavior shield is still in partial mode so it won't blocks anything.Correct me if I am wrong.Not sure about it. :-[

According to this blog post avast! has its own PDF decoder to scan PDF files.

Behavior Shield is now working as it is since 6.0.1000 (default action changed to "Auto-decide" from "Allow").

Regarding 'signature' detections, free and paid versions are same. So yes, free has full pdf coverage.
