You may have to work from safe mode to deal with it if it isn't letting you install anything.

However this should work, but the most important bit is doing the preparation with the rkill tool before trying the other tools.

Why can't you load avast, what errors are you getting ?

~~~~
You could try a clean reinstall of avast:
- Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1125 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
####
Not sure what you can do about your images and documents, I would normally say no problem, just restore your backup copies, but guess you haven't been backing them up.
I don't know if this is a symptom of the Windows XP Restore, was there anything about that on the bleepingcomputer.com link that I gave ?
e.g. the bit about how to see hidden files/folders, they may just be hidden.
Are your start menu items still there or are they missing ?  If they are missing do not use any temp file cleaners
Download Unhide.exe to your desktop and run
THEN
Download RogueKiller to your desktop
  • Quit all running programs
  • For Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply run RogueKiller.exe
  • When prompted, type 6 and validate
  • The RKreport.txt shall be generated next to the executable.
  • If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe
Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.
Please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.
Back this morning. I uninstalled Avast and then went to the free download and loaded it again. Still lots of problems. I am on another computer that I also have Avast on. Not sure if I can do what you want me to do. I have two seperate accounts because I bought at different times. This one seems to be working OK.
