I just had the same problem with a customer. She had installed a Free Version, but couldn't enter it due to password protection. So I just booted the PC into Safe Mode (with Remote Control), turned off the password function in the Free version. Then deleted the Free version with the uninstall tool. Booted back to normal mode and installed the Internet Security version. Then after rebooting for the AIS install I try to check the license information and then the password protection screen comes up again. On a clean install! That isn't right...

Ughhhh!  Something is wrong than,

One of the techs may come in and request some specific information about the computer/network/OS causing the issues, as well as the specific Avast product and version.  If no one has checked the "use a password box," and Avast is prompting for a password after a clean install, that is not right.

Is this customer on a network? If she is, has she talked to her network administrator or head person of that particular department?  If it is part of a business network, I wonder if their firewall, all computers on the network are being blocked from adding additional installations?  At several colleges that I went to and had computer training, they would lock down student installs to prevent abuses of the system.

Let's see what other information that Avast support people may have to say that could help you in this matter.

It was a home user (old lady) which had a fairly new laptop with Windows 7 on it.

Sigh, I reinstalled it like 4 or 5 times now. Even with the new 6.0.1119 version. I also deleted everything related to avast with regedit in the safe mode. Again, avast asks for a password after a clean install of Internet Security. When I went back to safe mode after the clean install I could access the avast settings but could not change anything (like it was corrupted and you can't turn off the self defense). I tried to turn off the password protection in the safe but it would not let me.

The reseller support could not help me so far, so if anyone knows an anwser, it would be nice.

This could be malware related, maybe.

Please do the following:

  • Download Malwarebytes Antimalware free here: Click!
  • Install the downloaded Malwarebytes Antimalware free
  • Run Malwarebytes Antimalware free by double-clicking on it's desktop icon
  • In Malwarebytes Antimalware free go to the tab Update and update it
  • In Malwarebytes Antimalware free go to the tab Scanner
  • Select Perform quick scan and click on Scan button

After the scan has finished, the scan-log will automatically open in notepad.
Do not close and do not apply any action within Malwarebytes Antimalware free right now.

  • In notepad click on File and then on Save as
  • In the Save as window select any convenient folder to save in
  • At the bottom of the Save as window make sure code ANSI is selected
  • At the very bottom of the Save as window click on Save

Attach the log file you just saved to your next post by clicking on Additional Options at the bottom left of the forum post editing screen.

I will review the log as it comes in and give further advice. Should you receive no answer in due time because I am offline, just close Malwarebytes Antimalware free and check here at a later time.

Thank you

This time it was not the user's decision / no action was required. I only clicked
upgrade program. After the requested reboot there was a dialog box asking for a
password to make any changes, a box I had never dealt with before.

Avast will not impose a password protection unless a user sets the option and defines the password. That's a fact. User action is required. Maybe someone else did enable that option on your PC without you knowing it?

Yes it happen to me, I never had to password protect my Avast, but after the upgrade program from 5.xxx version (i forgot) to version 6.0.1203 suddenly this 'very very amazing desktop security tool' asked me to enter a password. Anyway thanks for the 'removal tool'. I would reinstall AVAST.
