Computer restarts after installing avast!
« on: October 08, 2004, 10:56:06 PM »
Hello
I've got a computer on which I cannot install avast! 4 Home no matter what I try. I have installed avast! 4 Home successfully on two others without problems so I don't know what gives on this one machine.

Here's some background:
Computer is running WinXP Pro SP2. It came with McAfee and I uninstalled McAfee and tried to install avast! long before the machine was patched with SP2 and installation was not successful. So, I installed AVG 7 and have been running for quite sometime without problems. Well, since I installed SP2, I wanted to give avast! another try on this machine, so I uninstalled AVG and tried to install avast! again. Here's what happens: avast! installs fine, but after restarting the machine the machine goes to the logon screen. I logon and everything seems normal, but then before you know it the machine restarts all by itself. It does this until I uninstall avast! through Safe Mode.

I would appreciate greatly any assistance that can be provided by this forum.  :)

Maverick

Welcome to the Forums
Please try to remove the proior installation of Avast using the uninstall utility which can be downloaded HERE. Please reboot after you run this program and then provided there is no other AV program installed on your computer, re-install avast.
Please let us know how you make out.

Besides Bobs advice, you might also want to check event viewer, and see what pops up!

maverickdr,

Also welcome to the forum. I am wondering if you have your system restore feature turned off? If you haven't, there is a possibility that your pc has at some point in time been infected with either the WW32Blaster worm, or one of the Sasser variants (worm). Both of these worms cause the pc to shut down but generally they have a pop-up screen that tells you the pc will shut down in 60 secs or so. This is just a thought and I probably am way off base. If, your system restore is on then you might have to shut it off, later restart it to purge the files clean and then go about re-installing some of your programs. Just a thought :)

Thank you helpers...but

I did all those things before I resorted to the forum. The reason for the restart is the way XP was configured. I reconfigured it so now I get a BSOD and it shows MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS and I am getting a stop error 0x00000044. In Event Viewer, it said the computer was restarted after a debug check failed or some such nonsense. THe computer will NOT run except in Safe Mode with avast! installed. :'(

I am sorry that I couldn't read your mind concerning what you may or may not have done before posting in this forum. I offered suggestions as to what I know at times should be done in similiar situations. :) There may be someone else here in the forum that can offer more concise information in your situation, I don't know. Hope you get your problem resolved. :)

I'm sorry if I offended you, Neal.  :( I wasn't expecting anyone to read my mind.

I was and am hopeful that perhaps there is something that might be a more likely fix than installing and reinstalling the program. I thought that the forum could be a source of information that is not in the FAQs or other self-help available. The forum was my last resort, not my first; after so many years of working on computers, I understand that each machine can be different in equipment and installed software. I've had success with avast! on two of my own machines for awhile now; I am befuddled that it won't work on a third machine. I will welcome any help because I don't want to throw in the towel. Understandably, no software is perfect or all things to everyone, but avast! is too good to throw away. :)

Bob and everybody,

Wowee Zowee!  :D Success was mine thanks to your suggestion as well as the entire thread.

I had to analyze the Event Viewer, update the BIOS, install updated Video and Modem drivers, uninstall a System Restore program from the manufacturer (IBM Rapid Restore), reinstall ASPI drivers, delete and restore three user profiles and defrag the hard drive. With fingers crossed I went for my FOURTH install attempt and I was successful after all that. It would be nice if I could reinstall the updated System Restore program, but that has failed after three attempts. Oh well, maybe not catching a virus will prevent me from having to restore the system anyway!

Many thanks to all who looked in and lent a hand.  ;D

Sincerely,
Maverick

P.S. The harder I work the luckier I get :D

If you are experiencing this error on an IMB, uninstall IBM Rapid Restore.

It worked for me.
