Can't turn on firewall!
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:06:30 AM »
Hope someone can help me with this one. A few weeks ago, I got the Blue Screen of Death, and was able to get rid of it just by turning the computer off for a while.

When it came back up, everything seemed normal but now the firewall will NOT come back up, no matter what I try. I keep getting the error message that my comupter is not protected, but when I go to click on the checkbox to turn the firewall on, a popup comes up and just reads, "Unable to start firewall!"

Does my computer have a virus? I am using Internet Security, which I bought last year.

Download AIS by clicking on the blue "AIS" in my signature.
Install it (no uninstall of current version needed)
Reboot.
Check + report back, please.

OK, I installed the AIS from the link at the bottom of that message, but when I restarted the computer, the BSOD showed up again. The Technical information is as follows:

MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS

STOP: 0x00000044 (Ox8A5D7518, 0x00001BC0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Now what???

Also, just so you know, when I turned the computer off again and then back on, it gave me the option to start it up with the last known good configuration, so I did. But, the firewall problem is back, the same as before. I cannot turn it on. When the Internet Security User Interface window gives me the error message that my firewall is OFF, and I click on "Fix Now," it gives me the message, "The following components could not be started: Firewall."When I click "OK," it brings me back to the Attention screen, and when I click on the "Turn on" link for firewall, it gives me the same error message as before, "Unable to Start firewall."

I am not clear how to reinstall the software, since they don't send disks, they just send a link in an email. I don't think I still have the email! And it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a hold of the tech support people at Avast! Thank goodness for you guys!!! So can someone help?

More 411: I went to "Add or remove programs," selected "Avast Internet Security Setup," and then clicked on "Repair." The following message then came up: "The Avast! Firewall driver couldn't be installed. The installation will proceed without the Avast! Firewall component."

1. Download whatever product you are using now from Avast's Website: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Save to your desktop or wherever you can find it later.

2. Uninstall using the uninstall tool (instructions and link can be found here): http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

3. Once done, install avast again from the file that you downloaded in step 1.

Insert your license key.  If you don't have your key or lost it, you can request a replacement here: http://www.avast.com/license-center

Thanks for the links, but where do I go to download the Avast software program I paid for? I purchased Avast! Internet Security last year, and I have no idea how to re-load this onto my computer. I went to the free downloads page, but I do not want to load the free version. That doesn't offer as much protection, and I do online banking and such. HELP!

Maybe your windows firewall is on........ check it...

If the the problem persists reinstall the avast software........

So am I to deduce from this that it is best, once Avast Internet Security is properly installed, that I should turn off Windows Firewall?

Dear Friends ~
I am at an impasse. I have removed the damaged Avast! file from the computer, but I cannot figure out how to re-load the Avast! Internet Security that I paid for last year! I can load the free version, but when it comes time for me to install the license key for the paid version, I am unable to pull up the key from the original email that was sent to me. This seems crazy! I can access the one that I didn't have to pay anything for -- the one the company gives away for NOTHING, but the one I paid good American dollars for? Nope. That one, I am locked out of. Making sense to anyone???

Well, I am at a loss. I fired up the computer this morning, all ready to download the software from the above link, and the BSOD was up AGAIN! (I am writing this from my other computer)This is about the fourth time that the BSOD has shown up for me in the last several weeks.

Here's what I did a few days ago, at my wit's end and afraid of not having any antivirus software on that computer. I removed the old Avast! Software, assuming it was corrupted somehow. After this, I went to the Avast website and just loaded the free software on it. Then, I had to leave, so turned the computer off. And then, this morning... well, you know what happened.

So, once I saw the BSOD, I did what I have done previously that worked. I turned the computer off again, and started it in Safe Mode. I selected "Last known good configuration" with the mouse, and then windows started up normally. But when the sign-in screen came up, the keyboard no longer worked! I checked the connection at the back of the computer, and there is no apparent problem. So then I turned the computer off again, and tried to start the whole process over again. And yep -- the BSOD showed up again.

So is my computer eternally screwed up!?!?!? ??? ??? ???
