The list of scanners i used...before founding AVAST

I used (this is a personal opinion of these scanners)

First scanner was :

F prot > had no resident shield if i remeber correctly (verry old version + 10 years)

AVAST 32 >  i found the layout to outdated so i changed

Innoculate >  they stopped updating the sig files

AVG 6.0 > verry nice free scanner but it failed from protecting me from a virus,
so i stopped working with it.

Antivir PE > good program , altough outdated layout, but verry good for resources,
but it had TO many problems with its unpacking engine and
updates where way to big (3 meg)

AVG 6.0 PRO > they included many more detections so it served me well, after my 1
year license was over, i decided to delete it

Norton (trail) > Messed my register and PC up > major slowdown etc...

Macafee (trial)  > Even worse than Norton (no need to say more)

Kaspersky (trail)  > Good program, but TO resource hungry for me (so i stopped
using it) only had trial of 30 days though...

PC cillin (trial) > good detection and resident scanner, but i found the layout to
                         childish :)

Norman (trial)  > VERRY good program > but sad support...easy to use though.

AVAST4.0 HOME > Must be a gift from heaven...after using (trailing) so many programs, I finally found a program with good support and excellent detection. and fine looking layout. (I used this for 4-5 months)

AVAST 4.0 PRO > after using the home edition i decided i would like to profit from the extra features offered by PRO, so spend my beloved money on a scanner that kicks the balls of all others. Now i'm stuck with this scanner for a long time :) before my license expires.  SWEET ! Its saved my ass countless times now. Don't be a fool and buy and install AVAST PRO !

I used this av programs:

McAfee: very powerful, configurable but take a lot of RAM (decresing significantly your performance). I do not think it´s worse than Norton.

FProt: had no resident shield, works only on DOS. There are updates (and releases) on the Web.

AVG 6.0 Free: good scanner but probably will not be free in future. Very little resourses in comparison with avast 4.0.

Norton (Suite 2003): poor help, imposible support, eats your RAM. Completely messe your Windows Registry. Do not recommend. After onte instalation, you must format your HDD. No one tool removes completely this application.

Avast 4.0: Stay here: excelent program, support and detection. If you can and want, go to avast 4.0 Pro.

Technical (avast 4.0 Home user).

Two tools provided by Symantec, Rnis & Rnav should remove it all. ;)

I would not be so sure...
There are a lot - quite a lot - of Registry keys that are missed...
If you want to see them, try jv16 PowerTools 1.3 at http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.shtml

Nobody believes on Symantec removal on the Web...
Best regards and thanks for replying  :)

Guess your right tech.
Use jv16 myself, and it always finds some leftovers.

Tests on new Beta version of Norton and McAfee Antivirus in a Pentium 4, 1,4GHz e HDD at 5.400 RPM give this:
Norton eats 46Mb RAM  >:(
McAfee eats 29,1 Mb RAM  :(
avast 4.0 just 11,1 Mb RAM  ;D

See your point, but on a P4 box, does the ram usage really matter that much.  ???
But okay, not everyone runs a P4 ;D, so i guess it matter.

For that avast´s users and lovers that does not have the lucky of Omik and his speed machine, the others must think in RAM limits. Thanks, Waldo.

Oh no no.
I certainly dont have a P4 machine. Way too expensive for me yet.
Sorry for the confusion & misunderstanding.
I was referring to the testmachine you mentioned, where the Ram usage was testet. ;)

EDIT: Spelling :-[

Sorry Omik. I don´t have this machine too. The tests were done by another professional (trusted one) and I would´t ever test Norton or McAfee in my machines. Both aren´t good enoght to me  ;D
