After upgrading each of my PCs running AIS I encountered a problem where the boot process appeared to stall. 2 machines running XP Pro were affected. Initially I thought that there was a problem with the MBR on those two boxes but I was able to boot into the safe mode on both without any problems. While in the safe mode, I completed a repair of the Avast install. The problem was solved.

I find it stupidly amazing that Avast can't create an update process that doesn't require rebooting the whole PC.  Is it really that difficult to have a separate update process that stops the service, updates the code and then starts the service?

General (i.e not-related-to avast!-in-particular) answer.
An update that requires changes to or removal of a running system-dependent windows file or process must be done while that process is inactive. This is generally considered preferable to a stop error.

The service? No.
The drivers and system-wide hooks, injected into many/all running processes throughout the system... yes.

i downloaded the new version and after restarting my computer i have run into a problem! now my computer wont let me into my control panel or even other things like solitare, snipping tool etc and i'm getting a message from windows software protection keeps comingup on the screen   saying

An unauthorized change was made to windows

EDIT also i have new updates from windows but it wont let me right click them but will let me right click everything else on the taskbar

I have just installed Firefox Beta 5.0.2 release. Avast WebRep disabled by defaults. But working well, just have to use Addon Compatibility Reporter and enable it.

Agreed, avast shouldn't go chasing all beta developments, but concentrate on the avast product in relation to regular released applications (I thing that is a big enough task).

I love how avast is giving us new builds frequently and improving. I dont know how they do it but they are just freaking awesome!

Any solution to this?
