You do have protection, however the program itself is rather outdated and support will end soon... and the protection will decrease rapidly.
You should update to new version 6.

And update WinXP to SP3. That is important.

I don't think you'll be able to download the off-line SP3 from MS any more ??? I think it about 230 megabyte file size

Download the new free version (click on the blue free in my signature).
Uninstall the current 4.8 from your PC.
Reboot.
Install the downloaded version.
Reboot + register via the programs GUI (no more entering of keynumbers necessary).

You can download the installer on any other pc and transfer it via USB stick to yours. Same goes for this: WinXP SP 3 stand-alone installer.

I take it you dont recommend installing the new 6.0 Avast version from the "Program Update" off the right click "Updating" bar from Avast 4.8 already installed?

Should I remove Avast 4.8 from Control Panel before installing the new 6.0 version?

Do i need any other uninstallation tools?

If you could please answer all three questions above thanks

(1)no

(2)yes, a clean installation of avast will be of benifit and help eliminate any problems since you are running a very outdated version of avast.

(3)no, but running ccleaner after the uninstall reboot can help clean up any leftovers.

so where should i uninstall 4.8 from? isn't that required for a clean install of 6.0?

Control Panel -> Software.
Just like any other program, normal uninstall procedure.
Then reboot.
Install new version and reboot once more.
Done.

Isn't there an uninstall tool required to remove avast 4.8 completely before installing the new 6.0 version?

Someone here said its beter to uninstall the older version from the program itself rather than Control Panel, does it matter?

Should I create a restore point before uninstalling the old avast 4.8 before removing it, would i then be able to reinstall it if i dont like or if something goes wrong with the newer version install?

Just in case, but I don't think you'll need it.
