Isn't there an uninstall tool required to remove avast 4.8 completely before installing the new 6.0 version?

Someone here said its beter to uninstall the older version from the program itself rather than Control Panel, does it matter?

Uninstall tool is only needed if there is a problem removing avast, uninstall your old version via control panel/software(remove programs) as Zyndstoff and myself have already mentioned.

Have there been any issues or problems noted with avast 6.0?

What are you expecting? Of course there have been issues noted. As have with notepad.exe, adobe reader, firefox, and zillions of other programs, be they small or large, complicated or simple.

There are 125 million avast users, so there are 125 million different PC setups concerning operation system, tweaking progs, unknown malware infection, hardware issues and, and, and... I estimate that at least 98% of all problems noted have their cause in individual PC setups and not in Avast bugs.

Avast 6 is a superb program, stable and mature and as far as I can judge bug free and you will most probably encounter no problems at all.

However: update your Win XP to SP3 and the IE to version 8 first.

As stated, when updating Avast program there is usually no need for the uninstaller.

I have always found it is better to wait several weeks or months before installing any new programs and to create a restore point before the install just in case there are problems with the newer version.

If I create a restore point before removing Avast 4.8, will I be able to restore it if there are problems with the newer version?

Wait a few weeks or months, I think you have exceeded even your own prerequisite by some margin ;D

Avast 5.0 version releases 2010-03-09 through 2010-09-07; avast5.1 version releases 2010-12-31 through 2011-01-13; avast 6.0 version releases 2011-02-23 through 2011-05-11.

Programs are ongoing development, so at some point you are going to have to make the leap of faith. So If you are waiting for everything to be perfect, you may have a long wait as nothing in life is perfect.

I have been using avast for over 7 years and have been involved in every beta trial bar one and I have updated to the new versions at the earliest opportunity. I haven't experienced a serious problem that has cause me to regret my actions; I do have a robust backup and recovery strategy so that I can recover my system from any problem (not just any avast issue) in a very short time.

I use drive imaging software and take a weekly hard disk image that I save to a second hard disk. This is by far superior to windows system restore as that doesn't cover everything, not to mention it isn't 100% and can have unforeseen circumstances.

It is fine for this forum, but not this topic as it is not directly related.

But the short answer is you won't loose all of your files as the update only effects windows OS files.

That is provided you are just installing the service pack and not doing a fresh format and OS install.
