Zerolin virus deleted my inbox. Where is backup?
« on: October 11, 2004, 09:53:32 PM »
JS: Zerolin-5 (trj) 9/30/04 11:01

Even though I don't think I ever opened the email.  A virus scan showed the Zerolin virus in my inbox and then in the junk file.  It deleted my inbox.  Avast says it makes backup files.  How do I find them?

I use Mozilla 1.7, Windows ME (unfortunately) and Avast version 4.1 home edition.

Avast is not backing up every file. So unless you have created a backup or Mozilla does it, your inbox is very likely lost. If you are lucky you can retrieve the delete file with Handy Recovery (link is somewhere on this board) But that will also bring back the infection.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Do a search of these forums for 'thunderbird' and 'inbox' (without the quotes) as a number of people have deleted their inbox (contrary to various warnings in the help/faqs of the email program). In one of the threads there is a suggested program to undelete files.

If you find it and recover it you will have to manually find the infected email (check each email in turn) and delete it manually.

Best advice in never use your inbox as a storage device, use it to check emails and then put them in other more appropriate folders for the subject of the email. That way if you have a deletion/corruption problem with your inbox (it seems to happen more frequently to the inbox), big deal you only lose a few emails.

Check out this Links Thread, you might find a program of use there also.
