I am trying to schedule a boot scan but the menu item for it is grayed out. How do i get it back?

Bootscan is not available on Windows 98(se). My guess is you are using that.

is ther a way to put avast on aboot disk and get it to run?

There is a free dos version of Avast which you can use.
There is also the BART cd from which you can boot and do a scan whitout loading the windows version on your drive.
You can find the link and key for the dos version
