Just to throw another log on the fire, I think Chrome is safer than Firefox, at least in their default installations , without the non-user friendly addons.

I gave up on IE many years ago, but I'm forced to continue to update it because it is integrated into the OS you have to keep it up to date and get all the associated security updates for it.

Who will can exploit an application that's not in use ??? Whoever tries to exploit your system or another application first need to exploit the browser you are using(bypass it) and then the targeted program(executing it).  ;)

I never thought of that before, it acctually sound like a really good idea. IE9 seems to be safer than other browsers right now but that can change. Opera is deffinetally the most malware-prone browser.

Using Opera for years and I never got any infection whatsoever in my browsing experience using Opera...
Of course Opera didn't stop me frow downloading malware, but it happens because I'm deliberately downloading it for my own malware collection.

The same goes for Firefox and IE. I use it for years and almost never got any infection by using it (I rarely got hit and when it happen I have my antivirus blocking, intercepting, or cleaning it).

So, any browser is malware-prone browser only if it being used by malware-prone user...

IE 9 is better than firefox....

Never.

Remember, never in my opinion

+3 I still smell a dirty little IE8 & IE9 dead rat up my noise

I like firefox but i dont use it because most of the toolbars get installed in the firefox and is a pain to remove them(compleately)....

When i use IE 9, When my browser is unstable i just reset my IE and it comes back to normal self....

Firefox doesnot even have a reset option, hope they include in the next version...

I never install toolbars.  Most of them contain adware anyway and/or clutter my monitor.  Be careful what you click when you install something, and opt for a Custom Install so you do not accidentally install an unwanted toolbar.  But there are ways to uninstall toolbars too.

Never had a problem in this area, no toolbar installs automatically, you have to be somewhat more diligent in the software that you install as many and their friends want to install a browser toolbar (in all of your browsers).

Uncheck any toolbar option in installed software, as I said you have to be diligent and read the installation dialogue windows watching out for toolbar options. Many however, are only seen if you opt for a custom install as the default install will have the toolbar option checked.

So this isn't down to firefox, but the software and due-diligence of the user (or not) in installing toolbars.

I use IE9, Chrome and Firefox 4 and when i get bored of using one browser i will change to one of the others. Currently i am using IE9 and find it very good and on the security front. Firefox 4 has useful features like AdBlock and NoScript but i agree that these can sometimes be overkill but i suppose it depends on the type of websites you are viewing. In my opinion it is a little pointless arguing over which browser is best between the 3 i have mentioned as they all do the same job. If you like your add-ons/extensions i would say go for Firefox 4. If you like pure speed the definitely go for Chrome. Tried Safari once and uninstalled it 10mins later.

Btw, if you don't know how to 'not install a toolbar', you should be extremely careful..!! ;D
