Size of 6.0?
« on: May 16, 2011, 06:34:29 PM »
I know one guru here was still on dial-up until recently.
The last update was too big to handle on my pony express 28.8 kbps and I had to have a friend download it and burn me a disc.
I have looked at as many places as I could think of but can't find the size of this new one.
So how big is it?  Is there an alternative to the friend technique?
How in general can the size of a download be discovered before the phone is tied up all day?
Thanks

Thanks Pondus.
That is an out-of-reach size for my connection.
I don't need movies, but anti-virus updates would be nice.

Well program updates are something different and not too frequent, the virus definitions are incremental and in the KBs rather than MBs.

Once you have the latest version of avast installed, you shouldn't have to download the full program every time. The program update from the avast user interface would be much smaller as that to would only be changing the elements that have changed. This may be a couple or few MB and much more manageable.

You never said what version of avast you have right now as it mignt be possible to update from the user interface ?

I have 5.1.889 with definitions up to date.
When I started to download 6.0.1125, the progress bar looked very much like it was going to be a biggee and a longee.
That is the size I was enquiring about.
50 million plus or minus has been prohibitive in the past, but I'm willing to try anything reasonable.
Thanks for the input.

Well the update from 5.1 to 6.0 would be quite a big one as essentially it is virtually a complete replacement. The only thing that you might not have to download in full would be the virus database, which would probably reduce that by half. But we as avast users don't have that kind of information, so it is based on a best guess on what could be reused.

So I would try to find a friend with broadband, or a local Library or Public service or Internet cafe, etc. to get the fully download so you have a copy should you need to reinstall at any point in the near future.

I remember all to well my years on dial-up (only been on broadband for about 7 months) and how much of a pain it can be and my connection speed was much better that 28.8.
