CakeWalk won't start after Avast Install
« on: October 14, 2004, 04:02:41 AM »
I installed the trial version of Avast Pro and CakeWalk , a midi sequencing program by TwelveTone Systems will no longer start. It is an older version of CW, originally written for 16 bit Windows, but is the best for my needs so I still use it with my current OS (WinXP-home-SP2). I have restored to a point before the Avast install and it works again...every time.

Hello Rick... Welcome.
16-bit applications could have strange behavior under Windows XP SP2.
Did you change any default setting, specially from Behavior Blocker (or Standard Shield)?
If you add a REM before the line of avast! driver in file
C:\Windows\System32\Config.NT
will your application work?
(See with Notepad at the bottom of that file:
REM device=C:\... path ...\aswmonds.sys)

No,you just need to run this registry patch:
http://freeweb.siol.net/razor256/downloads/vdd2.reg

Right click and save target as...

Nothing special. Just doubleclick the downloaded vdd2.reg file and you're done :)

That is done.
Now, at least, I get an error notice

"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose Close to terminate the application
Close - Ignore"

Both options create the same effect... nothing.
I guess I should have mentioned that I chose to install in:
C:\Avast4\
instead of the default install directory.
( I can never remember the company names when I go look for the programs)
Help!

Same error (except it mentions the correct path )
So, something else.....

Go into Add/remove Programs and use Repair function in avast! uninstaller.
Use vdd3 patch if needed. If it doesn't work, try to uninstall avast!,restart machine and use avast! Uninstall Utility to clean remaining things. Then reinstall avast! to default path (program files\Alwil Software\avast!) and use vdd2.reg patch. I hope this will work, but you'll lose the 60 day trial i think.
Maybe Alwil staff could help you with this last problem.

Did you do what I first suggest? (edit config.nt file, boot, ...)

No, I took your (2nd) advice and did the registry patch.
To answer your question:
I DID try unchecking the 16-bit  scan in Standard Shield, but to no avail.
I rechecked it and then tried the regedit solutions offered.
Now,
I remarked out the statement in the config.nt file and although I still get the same error, if I hit Ignore, the program DOES load and run.  It takes an extra click but I can certainly live with that if necessary.
Should I somehow 'undo' the registry patches?
Might that eliminate the error and keep the program running?
Thanks one and all for all the effort.
 ;D

Can you browse to the registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers

(maybe not always exist)

and see what do you have?
you should have only: C:\ ... \aswMonVd.dll value or, if you have another software, other keys... What do you have there?

Your keys are addressed to:
C:\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll

Is this path correct? I mean, is there a file aswmonvd.dll there?
If not, can you correct the path?
If yes, I think the only correction will be the REM command on the config.nt file  :-\, then boot and test it again...
