New Avast User - Log-on Problems

I'm running a laptop with Windows 7 64x which is less than 6 months old.  My free trial of TrendMicro Titanium anti-virus expires in a week or so, and a tech-savvy friend of mine suggested I download the free version of Avast! to replace it.  I did, but as soon as I installed it, I started having problems logging onto my user account.  Boot up would proceed normally, but when I would attempt to log on to my administrator user account, the "Welcome" screen would hold for 45min+.  I attempted to ctrl+alt+del, but the Task Manager froze up as well, until a hard restart was my only option to do anything.  From there I started Windows in Safe Mode and did a System Restore to the point just prior to Avast! installation.  Problem solved.  I attempted to re-download and install Avast! again, and the same problem persists - another freeze-up, another hard-reset and another system restore.  Am I missing something?

did you uninstall Trend Micro before installing avast?
did you run a removal too to clear all leftovers after the uninstall?
