XP Pro BSOD
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:06:53 PM »
I have been getting BSOD since I came back from vacation yesterday.  I installed the latest (v 6) Avast right before I left a week ago.  I'm running XP Pro OS.  Is there a known issue with the install?  BSODs when I'm in MS Explorer.  It's the only change I made prior to this problem.  Any thoughts?

You can send minidump file to Peter Kurtin. ;) also you can send fulldump file to Avast: ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/

Was this your first installation of avast ?
If so what was your previous AV and how did you remove it ?

Or were installing the latest version of avast over an existing one ?
If so what was the previous version of avast installed ?

Normally it would be suggested to do a clean reinstall to the latest version, but hold of on that one just for now.

If you previously had avast installed then - It can be sent to avast for analysis - Upload any minidump or memory.dmp files, zipped to reduce size.  Give the zip file you are uploading a unique name (e.g. catdawg-mem-dump.zip, etc), so they can identify it. It might not be a bad idea to create a text file (readme.txt) with any relevant information, avast topic, user name, etc. etc. in the zip file.

- Memory dump locations, Mini Dump files in, C:\Windows\Minidump\ - Full Kernel dump file, C:\windows\memory.dmp

Upload the zip file to the ftp server ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming:
- Using Internet Explorer, Connect to the link and drag the file into the Right pane and drop it, that starts the upload, you don't have read access to this folder.

Or

Upload it using the Run command-line in Windows: Windows Key + R (to get the run box), copy and paste this
Code: [Select]
explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming and drag the file into the window, from another explorer window.

OK, hopefully it can be analysed soon.

What about the questions asked in my last post ?

Welcome to the forums.

I’ve been using pro for around 4 years or so now, with home version before that.  This is the very 1st issue I’ve had.

Avast was installed “overwriting” the old one (I guess…I just did the download and followed the prompts as usual).

Last v was the last v (5?) prior to my renewal.

Possibly best to go for a clean reinstall:
- Download the latest version of avast Pro 6.0.1125 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

The remove / reinstall yielded the same...more BSOD.

Then we will have to wait for the analysis and see if it is related to avast.

You didn't specifically say if you ran the uninstall utility for both avast5 & 6, presumably so ?

I would have thought a clean reinstall would have resolved it if it were related to avast as I too have XP Pro SP3 and no issues with this latest version.
