If you are going to ask for more information, it would help the OP to say what you want.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
For detection on on demand scans, check C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\Log  (Windows 2000, Windows XP). Or C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log (windows Vista, windows 7).

- You could enable a boot time scan. From the avastUI, Scan Computer, Boot-time Scan, Schedule Now button and reboot.

Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\report\aswBoot.txt file (XP location) C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\report\aswBoot.txt (Vista, Win7 location), check this file using notepad for info on the scan/detections, etc.

You're right, David.
But I get a bit tired of asking the same questions all the time.
While I usually don't like stickies, I would like to see one only related to the most basic questions, so we can refer the users to it. (eg. avast! version/os/firewall/other security software etc...)
Sorry for being OT with this.

Then create a text document with common responses, and just copy and paste, no hassle.

Otherwise how is the OP to know what information you want and you just end up with them asking (what information) and you have to respond with exactly that, catch22.

1. Is a possibility, still it would be easier to refer to an already existing post on the forum. ;)
2. The OP should always post everything he/she knows about the system. (I know, I'm dreaming. :P ;D)

You would still have to copy and paste the reference URL

Yes you are dreaming, as that is the exception rather than the rule, so when insufficient information is posted, you have to ask for it or let the topic pass by. Just asking for information of a user who really doesn't know what it is you want or perhaps they would have posted it in the first place.

This however, isn't helping the OP; we have to wait for them to get back to the topic with that information.
